        The Firefighters' Creed
                       Tim Murphy © 1998, 2001

On 28 November 2001, The Firefighters' Creed was designated the Official
Anthem of the New York State Fallen Firefighters Memorial.

There’s a War that’s being fought without Bombs or Rifle-shot;
There are deadly confrontations every day.
For the Enemy is Fire; and the Casualties grow higher,
Among those who place themselves in Danger’s Way.
It’s a Warrior Breed of men, who face the fires, and fight again,
When the Screaming Sirens sound their Battle Cry !
Where the Klaxons blare the call, they’ll be there to give their
All: They’ll lay their Lives on the Line, Do or Die !

When the terrorists attack, stab our Nation in the back -
Then our Firefighters lead the way once more;
With their brothers, the Police, the Volunteers and EMT's,
They are joined to combat this Unholy War.
With the strength of Saving Grace, they met the challenge
Face-to-Face, Even though the stakes had never been so
high - They took the Job and got it done, unsung Heroes
every one: They laid their Lives on the Line, Do or Die !

( Chorus ) When the flames are blazing high against the
smokey midnight sky, You will hear their Mighty Diesels
raging by ! They’ll proceed at greatest speed - it’s The
Firefighters’ Creed: They’ll lay their Lives on the Line, Do or
Die !

There’s a Piper on the hill, in the misty morning chill;
You can hear his lonesome bagpipe’s mournful drone.
Another Firefighter died; and his Brothers at graveside,
Will see his Widow and their Children aren’t alone.
For every Fireman has to know that he could be the Next to
go: It’s just the Nature of the Beast they can’t deny;
Every year they add more Names to the Brotherhood of
Flames: They’ll lay their Lives on the Line, Do or Die !

( Chorus ) When the flames are blazing high against the
smoky midnight sky, You will hear their Mighty Diesels raging
by ! They’ll proceed at greatest speed - it’s The Firefighters’
Creed:

( Countless Lives have been Saved by the Bravest of the
Brave ! ) ( Years of training - Endless Drill ! Dedication - Iron
Will ! ) ( Village Square - City Street ! They’re the Ones who
Take the Heat ! ) ( At each Station’s strident Bell, still they
charge straight into Hell !! ) They’ll lay their Lives on the Line,
Do or Die !

( Dedicated to The Bravest: those Women and Men, and
their Families - past, present, and future ... Firefighters all!)

When I'm called to duty god
wherever flames may rage
give me strength to save a life
whatever be its age

Help me to embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person from
the horror of that fate

Enable me to be alert
to hear the weakest shout
and quickly and efficiently
to put the fire out

I want to fill my calling and
to give the best in me
to guard my neighbour and
protect his property

And if according to your will
I have to lose my life
bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife

"If Prometheus was worthy of the wrath of heaven for kindling
the first fire upon earth, how ought all the Gods to honour the
men who make it their professional business to put it out?"

The Firefighter's Creed

I have no ambition in this world but one,
and that is to be a FIREFIGHTER.
The position may, in the eyes of some,
appear to be a lowly one,
but we know the work
which a firefighter has to do is to
believe that his is a noble calling.
There is an adage which says that:
"Nothing is destroyed, except by fire"
We strive to preserve from destruction,
the wealth of the world,
which is the product of the industry of men,
necessary for the comfort of both the rich & poor.
We are the defenders from fire,
of the art which has beautified the world,
the product of the genius of men
and the means of refinement of mankind.

But above all, our proudest endeavour is...
to save lives of men -
the work of God Himself.
Under the impulse of such thoughts,
the nobility of the occupation
thrills us and stimulates us to deeds of daring,
even at the supreme sacrifice.
Such consideration may not strike the average mind,
but they are sufficient to fill to the limit
our ambition in life and to make us
serve the general purpose of human society.

It's in the dead of winter
A cold and silent night,
When in the distance a fire alarm
And the sky is lit up bright.

My wife is rising from our bed
To calm our young sons' tears,
As I swing my legs over the edge
And pull on my turnout gear.

The cold night air slaps me in the face
As I head toward my car
And I think to myself, Why am I doing this
I probably don't know who they are.

But my adrenalin is flowing
God gives me the strength that I need.
No matter whose house it may be
I know I must succeed.

Engine One has responded,
Tanker One is near.
I hope no one is in the house
As I put on my breathing gear.

The fire blazes around us
As we crawl along the floor.
We hear muffled choking cries
From behind a bedroom door.
We enter the room and find a boy
About the age of mine
Thank God that we have reached him
Barely, just in time.

And when the fire is over
And the damage has been done,
I return home tired but thankful
That I can still hug my wife and son.

EMT's Prayer

GOD... Grant me the ability to give emergency care. With skillful hands,
knowledgeable mind, and tender loving care. Help me deal with
everything, when lives are on the line. To see the worst, administer aid,
and ease a worried mind. So help me as I go today, accept what fate may
be. Touch these hands, use this mind, help this E.M.T.

Amen

All gave some, Some gave all, All chose to fight, NONE chose to fall,

The little red box by the bed screams, And tells you of a fire you've seen only in you're dreams
"Mutual Aid" "Firefighter Down" You're ready to go but you only frown,

You get on the truck, You're heart is racing, You're almost afraid, Of what you'll be facing,

As you go on location, You are stopped in you're tracks, Firefighter friends of your's, Being carried
out on their backs,

You pray for you're comrades, Just hoping they don't die, Not even in the fire yet, You feel the tears
in you're eye,

The fire is out, The residents are grateful, But towards the beast you will always be hateful,

You're comrades survive, Hip-Hip Hooray, We all thank god for this wonderful day, But amidst this
day there is a sadness, A sadness that soon turns to madness....for,

All gave some, Some gave all, All chose to fight, NONE...Chose to fall

Heroes Where have all the heroes gone? They may be just down the
block or outside of town. They may be a neighbor or a stranger you
meet on the street. When you have a problem who can you call? Not
Superman or Batman or any other comic book hero. You call the
real-life heroes of today. You call the volunteers of the Fire
Departments and Life Squads of America.

How many people do you know who would get up in the middle of the
night or from the supper table to go save someone they have never
met or to save someone else's property from burning up? Not many.

I am the son of a Volunteer Firefighter and First Responder so I know
that when his tones drop he may have to go on that run and he may not
come back but that is a chance our family has to take. So when you see
that blue light coming up behind you please

remember that one day it might be you they are coming to save so
please give them the respect of letting them pass. REMEMBER, ONE
DAY IT MIGHT BE YOU.
